It’s no secret that living in Bath is a bit special. We get to walk past beautiful Georgian architecture on our morning commutes, stroll through rolling green parks on our lunch breaks, and enjoy a vibrant community of independent shops and creators every single weekend.

But now, the rest of the planet knows it, too.

In a massive global announcement, Bath has officially been crowned the happiest city in the world in Time Out’s 2026 Best Cities survey.

Polling more than 24,000 urbanites across the globe, the international survey looked deep into what makes city life actually worth living. When the data settled, our Somerset gem beat out major global hubs like Melbourne, Chicago, and Amsterdam to claim the top spot.

According to the data, a staggering 93% of Bath locals said living here makes them happy, while 91% reported finding pure joy in their everyday experiences around the city.

As a local photographer, I spend my days looking at Bath through a lens – and honestly, these results don’t surprise me in the slightest. Here is a breakdown of why Bath took the global crown, and exactly what that looks like on the ground.

1. A World-Class Sense of Belonging

Happiness isn’t just about beautiful buildings; it is about the people you share them with. Time Out’s index revealed that Bath ranked number one globally for community feel.

An incredible 86% of residents reported a genuine sense of belonging here, and 83% noted how easy it is to find your community. Whether it’s chatting with the vendors at Green Park Station, bumping into regulars at your favourite independent coffee shop, or coming together for local events, Bath manages to feel like a vibrant, interconnected village rather than a rigid city.

2. The Greenest Urban Escape on Earth

We all know how much a bit of nature can lift your mood, and this is another area where Bath absolutely dominated. The city topped the global index as the best city on the planet for green space and nature, earning an unparalleled 94% approval rating from residents.

We are incredibly spoiled here. You are never more than a few minutes away from a sweeping valley view, a quiet canal walk, or a historic park. From the manicured lawns of Royal Victoria Park to the wild, elevated views along the Bath Skyline walk, the city perfectly balances urban life with deep, breathing nature.

3. The Perfect Blend of Heritage and Modern

Time Out also highlighted Bath’s unique ability to honour its deep historical roots while fostering a thriving, modern personality. It isn’t a just a museum piece – it’s a living, breathing cultural hub with booming independent markets, events, and a creative spirit that keeps the historic streets feeling fresh and relevant. What Makes Bath Happy For You?

While the statistics and global rankings are incredible validation, the real joy of Bath is found in the small, quiet moments. It’s the afternoon sun hitting the Kennet & Avon canal, the smell of fresh pastries on a Saturday morning, and the hills that frame our view no matter which direction we look.

We might be biased, but Time Out just proved what we’ve known all along: there really is nowhere quite like home. Planning on visiting Bath soon? Read up on our dream Bath day trip: Everything you need to know and the top 10 things to do.
