A City Built on Natural Thermae Waters
For more than two millennia, the historic city of Bath has served as the UK’s ultimate sanctuary for rest, rejuvenation, and holistic healing. It’s no surprise it was recently voted the happiest city in the world. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and double inscribed in 2021, as part of the elite Great Spa Towns of Europe – Bath stands unique as the only destination in the United Kingdom where visitors can experience natural, mineral-rich thermal hot springs.
The city’s wellness legacy dates back to 863 BC when the Celtic King Bladud discovered the curative properties of the steaming mud. Later, the Romans engineered magnificent bathing complexes around these three thermal springs, which pump out over one million litres of mineral-dense water every single day at a consistent, soothing temperature of 46°C. From the aristocratic social hubs of the Georgian era to the cutting-edge therapies of today, Bath remains an undisputed global epicentre for physical and mental restoration.
Disclosure: I was hosted by some of the venues listed below for press tours or complimentary treatments. However, all opinions, recommendations, and reviews in this guide remain entirely my own.

Know Before You Go: Planning Your Bath Wellness Day
Book Your Slots Well in Advance: Places like Thermae Bath Spa and Lush Spa Bath do not offer walk-in sessions for treatments. Weekend availability often fills up months ahead. If you want a more tranquil environment with lower crowd levels, aim to secure a weekday morning entry.
Navigate the Parking Realities: Bath’s historic city centre is highly pedestrianised. Thermae Bath Spa, Lush Spa, and Manipura House do not have parking. However there are plenty of car parks or you take advantage of Bath’s excellent Park & Ride bus services. Retreats like The Bath Priory and Lucknam Park provide ample free on-site parking.
Check the Age Restrictions: To maintain a calm and quiet environment, many local spa facilities enforce strict age limits. For example, Thermae Bath Spa is strictly an adults-only facility (minimum age 16+ for entry, and 18+ for specific spa treatments).
The Original Roman Baths are for Viewing Only: A common misconception for first-time visitors is that you can swim in the historic Roman Baths. You cannot enter the water there due to safety and preservation rules. However, you are bathing in the exact same natural mineral springs right next door at Thermae Bath Spa!
Pack Accordingly: If you are visiting a day spa, robes, towels, and slippers are typically included in your package fee. However, you will need to bring your own swimwear. Flip-flops are also highly recommended for navigating wet tile walkways safely.

Thermae Bath Spa
I’ve had the pleasure of visiting Thermae Bath Spa on a few occasions as a local, and it never fails to impress. Because it is centrally located right in the historic heart of the city, it is incredibly easy to get to whether you are exploring Bath on foot or arriving by train.
The biggest treat by far is the open-air thermal pool on the rooftop. It offers breathtaking, panoramic views across the city skyline and the surrounding hills. Floating weightlessly in the warm, naturally heated mineral waters while looking out over the city an experience like no other.

Beyond the pools, the spa offers a fantastic variety of professional treatments, including deeply relaxing full-body massages. Another absolute must-visit during your session is the multi-sensory Wellness Suite. It features a unique Georgian steam room that pays homage to the city’s architecture, a soothing infrared room, and an invigorating ice chamber perfect for cooling down between thermal sessions.

Because of its well-deserved popularity, the spa can get incredibly busy over weekends. If possible, I highly recommend booking a weekday slot for a much quieter, more tranquil experience. Finally, keep in mind that due to its city-centre location, there is no on site parking, so plan to use public transport or park in a nearby city car park.
- The Experience: Britain’s premier municipal day spa. It offers visitors the chance to bathe in mineral-rich, naturally warm waters sourced directly from ancient local springs.
- Highlight Feature: The world-famous open-air rooftop pool providing breathtaking, 360-degree panoramic views across the historic Bath Abbey and Georgian skyline.
- Best For: Anyone wanting to connect with authentic, Roman-style mineral bathing history in a striking modern glass facility.

The Garden Spa by L’Occitane at The Bath Priory
I was recently invited to a tour of The Bath Priory, but it certainly won’t be my last visit. Nestled on Weston Road, this stunning 1835 Gothic-style Georgian manor house manages to pull off an incredible trick. It covers four acres of award-winning garden space which, considering how remarkably close it is to the bustling city centre, makes you feel like you have been instantly transported straight to the peaceful French countryside of Provence.

The hotel itself retains the warm, exclusive atmosphere of a grand private home, hosting 33 uniquely decorated guest rooms comprised of 26 elegant bedrooms and 7 luxurious crescent suites. Every room is beautifully styled with period antique furniture, making it a peaceful base for an overnight wellness getaway. Beyond the bedrooms, the pristine grounds encourage plenty of outdoor relaxation. You can play a traditional game of croquet on the manicured lawns, explore the fragrant walled kitchen gardens, or take a scenic 10-minute stroll right through the adjacent Royal Victoria Park directly into the heart of Bath.

The true highlight for wellness seekers is The Garden Spa by L’Occitane, which stands as the only official L’Occitane spa in the United Kingdom. The facilities are incredibly complete, featuring a beautiful indoor swimming pool, a poolside sauna, and a modern elliptical steam pod. During the warmer months, the absolute crown jewel is the outdoor pool tucked away inside the leafy gardens. Treatments here rely heavily on authentic botanical essential oils and sensory scent journeys.

Wellness spans to the culinary offerings here as well. The heart of the manor house is its celebrated 3 AA Rosette restaurant, where you can dine on modern, French-influenced European cuisine while gazing out across the expansive lawns. For a more laid back vibe, The Pantry offers casual British bites, classic afternoon teas, and refreshing drinks that spill out onto the terrace bar when the weather is fine. Plus, unlike the pedestrianised city centre locations, visiting this retreat gives you the added convenience of free on-site parking.
- The Experience: Set inside a stunning 1835 Gothic style Georgian house, this location offers the distinct, peaceful atmosphere of a countryside estate nestled just outside the city centre.
- Highlight Feature: The Garden Spa by L’Occitane. The only L’Occitane spa in the offering a range of luxurious treatments and products, includes treatments rooms, indoor pool, steam treatments and heated outdoor pool.
- Best For: A quiet, luxurious day escape. The spa’s signature rituals are drawn entirely from the L’Occitane grand herbarium, instantly transporting your senses to Provence through essential oils.

Manipura House
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Lynsey Keyes, the director and co-founder of Manipura House, who has been a clinical massage therapist for over 15 years. What immediately struck me during our conversation was Lynsey’s deep, genuine passion for everything Manipura stands for. It quickly becomes clear that a visit here isn’t just about getting a standard massage.

Instead, the focus is entirely on the “why” and the “how” – delving deep into the root causes of bodily tension, discomfort, or stress, and providing clients with practical, long-term ways to manage their physical well-being. This powerful ethos and passion carry through the entire business, making an impact in ways that may be overlooked by more commercial day spas.
The expertise at Manipura House is reflected in their comprehensive treatment menu, which is thoughtfully designed to cater to every body’s unique needs. Their services range from relaxing Swedish massages and specialist pregnancy massages to highly targeted sports massages and intensive Deep Tissue Massage. Rather than offering a rigid, one-size-fits-all routine, the team takes the time to understand your lifestyle and posture. This clinical approach ensures that whether you are recovering from an injury, managing chronic muscle tightness, or simply needing to decompress, your treatment is completely bespoke.

Located on Queen Street, this welcoming holistic hub sits right in the city centre, making it incredibly easy to access by foot while you are exploring Bath. It is the perfect city-centre escape for anyone who prefers authentic, results-driven bodywork over basic pampering. I highly recommend booking an appointment at Manipura House if you want a truly transformative wellness experience that leaves you feeling lighter, rebalanced, and equipped with the knowledge to look after your body long after you step back outside.
- The Experience: Operating as a highly targeted, inclusive town centre wellness hub on Queen Street. This space shifts focus toward functional healing and community centred bodywork.
- Highlight Feature: Clinically driven, multidisciplinary therapies. They specialise in elite deep tissue massage, intensive sports stretch routines, and trauma-sensitive care.
- Best For: Individuals looking to move beyond simple pampering. It is perfect for targeting chronic pain, muscle tightness, or mental stress through custom, expert physical adjustments.

Luckham Park
I was given a tour of Luckham Park recently and it made me realise just how incredibly lucky we are to have such an exquisite, world-class retreat location right on our doorstep. Situated just a short, scenic drive from Bath, it feels like stepping into a completely different world the moment you pass through the gates. The approach sets the tone immediately. You drive down a magnificent, mile-long avenue lined with historic beech and lime trees, leaving the bustle of modern life completely behind.

Once you arrive, you are greeted by vast, rolling parklands, intricate walled gardens, and manicured lawns that span an impressive 500 acres of private Wiltshire countryside. It is a place that instantly ignites a desire to keep exploring. Beyond the peaceful walks, the estate offers an abundance of outdoor activities to fill your day.
You can wander through the fragrant rose gardens, play a game of tennis, or visit the premier equestrian centre for a guided horseback ride across the estate’s private trails.

The heart of the wellness experience here is The Spa at Lucknam Park, a state-of-the-art sanctuary that blends seamlessly into the historic surroundings. The indoor facilities are stunning, featuring a 20-metre swimming pool alongside a magnificent indoor/outdoor hydrotherapy pool that allows you to float in warm waters while looking directly out into a tranquil woodland arboretum. The spa also boasts an extensive thermal suite, which includes a soothing Japanese salt room, aromatic steam spaces, saunas, and a modern skincare mixology bar for bespoke facial treatments.
Its worth mentioning that from 3rd September – 24th September 2026 the Spa will be closed for refurbishments.

Culinary wellness is also taken to the highest level at Lucknam Park. The estate is home to the celebrated Michelin-starred Restaurant Hywel Jones, where you can indulge in sophisticated, locally sourced fine dining inside the grand mansion house. For a more relaxed, spa-day vibe, The Brasserie offers a bright, contemporary space featuring an open kitchen and wood-fired oven, serving up wholesome, seasonal dishes right next to the spa gardens.
It is an absolute must-visit for anyone looking to experience ultimate country luxury without traveling far from the city.
- The Experience: An opulent, award-winning 5-star sanctuary situated a short drive outside the city within 500 acres of pristine Wiltshire parkland.
- Highlight Feature: A magnificent 20-metre indoor pool alongside an indoor/outdoor hydrotherapy pool that looks out directly into a tranquil arboretum.

Lush Spa Bath
At first glance, you might be surprised to find a wellness sanctuary here, but tucked away, almost secretly, in the basement underneath the busy retail store is one of Bath’s best kept spa experiences. The moment you step down the stairs, the high-street bustle completely fades away, replaced by a cosy, low-lit haven designed to look like an inviting, rustic country kitchen.

After meeting with your therapist, what follows is a detailed and unhurried consultation which ultimately leads to your own unique journey. And it really is a journey. Rather than just picking a standard massage off a menu, the team at Lush Spa uses this time to understand your emotional and physical state, helping you choose custom essential oil massage bars, tailored words of affirmation, and bespoke sensory elements that define your session.

Located right on Union Street in the city centre, it is incredibly easy to access by foot and stands out as a wonderfully whimsical, deeply comforting escape that proves true wellness can be found in the most unexpected places.
